Family Surf Holiday in Morocco: The Complete Guide for Parents

A family surf holiday is one of the few trips where parents and kids genuinely do the same thing, laugh at the same wipeouts and celebrate the same first waves. Morocco makes it easy: short flights from Europe, sunshine all year, gentle sandy beaches and a warm welcome for children everywhere you go. This guide covers everything parents ask us before they book, from the right age to start surfing to what to pack and how to choose a family surf camp.

Quick answer: a family surf holiday in Morocco

  • Best age: most children can start from about six, as long as they are confident in the water.
  • Best time: Easter, summer and the October half-term, when waves are smaller and the sea is warmer.
  • Where: the sandy beaches around Taghazout and Tamraght, 45 minutes from Agadir airport.
  • Easiest option: a family surf camp with lessons, meals, equipment and transport in one price.

Why Morocco Is Perfect for a Family Surf Holiday

Families choose Morocco for the same reasons surfers do, plus a few that matter even more with children. Travel days are short, the time difference is small, and the weather is reliable enough that you are not gambling your only week off on a forecast. Here are the key numbers for a family surf holiday on the Agadir coast:

How Old Do Kids Need to Be to Surf?

There is no magic number, but most children are ready for real surf lessons from about six years old. What matters more than age is how they feel in the water: they should be happy to get their face wet, comfortable in waist-deep waves and able to listen to an instructor. Younger children can still enjoy the beach, play in the whitewater on a board with a parent close by and join in when they feel ready. Teenagers often progress faster than their parents, which is one of the best moments of a family surf trip.

What a Family Surf Week Looks Like

At our surf house, a family surf holiday follows a simple rhythm. After breakfast on the terrace, the van takes you to the beach of the day, chosen for the swell, wind and tide. The two-hour lesson is split by level when needed, so small children get patient one-on-one attention while parents and teenagers push a little further.

Lunch is a packed lunch on the beach, then everyone keeps playing and free surfing, supervised by our instructors, until we head back at around 3 pm. The rest of the afternoon is for the pool and naps, and the day ends with dinner together as the sun goes down. During the week there is a day in Paradise Valley, a visit to Agadir and its souk, and yoga sessions for the parents.

Our Family package brings all of this together for one fixed price of €1999 for up to five people, two adults and up to three children under 14, with seven nights in a family room with five beds, three meals a day, lessons, equipment and an airport pick-up.

Things to Do with Kids Besides Surfing

  • Swim in the natural rock pools of Paradise Valley, in the foothills of the Atlas.
  • Meet crocodiles and giant tortoises at Crocoparc, a botanical park just outside Agadir.
  • Watch the fishing boats come in at Taghazout harbour and eat grilled fish on the beach.
  • Explore the colours and smells of Souk El Had in Agadir, one of the biggest markets in Morocco.
  • Build sandcastles, play beach football with local kids and watch the sunset from the terrace.

Health and Safety for Kids

  • Sun: the UV is strong all year. Use a rash vest, a hat and high-factor sunscreen, and reapply after every session.
  • Water: children should drink bottled or filtered water, and plenty of it after surfing.
  • Ocean: kids only surf with an instructor on sandy beaches, and never swim at the rocky points.
  • Paperwork: check passport validity, entry rules and travel insurance well before you go, and read your government’s health advice for Morocco.

Our tip: do not plan every hour. The best family surf holiday memories usually come from the slow moments: a nap after a morning on the beach, a game of cards on the terrace, or an extra hour playing in the whitewater because the kids simply did not want to leave.

Frequently asked questions

Is Morocco safe for a family surf holiday?

Yes. The Taghazout area is relaxed and welcoming to children, and the main risks are the sun and the ocean. With lessons on sandy beaches and basic sun care, it is a very easy family destination.

Can my child surf if they are not a strong swimmer?

Beginner lessons take place in shallow water where children can stand, and the instructor stays close. They should still be comfortable in the water; tell us their swimming level when you book so we can plan.

How much does a family surf holiday in Morocco cost?

Our Family package costs €1999 for up to five people for seven nights, including the family room, three meals a day, lessons, equipment, excursions and an airport pick-up. Flights are extra.

Do parents need surfing experience?

No. Most parents on a family surf trip are complete beginners too. The lessons start from zero, and learning together is half the fun.

What should we pack for a surf holiday with kids?

Rash vests, hats, high-factor sunscreen, sunglasses, flip-flops, a warm layer for the evenings and any medicines your children need. Boards and wetsuits are provided.

Can we book an apartment instead of a family room?

Yes. You can upgrade to an apartment for €45 per night, with a private room with a double or twin beds and a room with three beds, subject to availability.
